3rd Annual Mayborn Literary Nonfiction Writers Conference of the Southwest

World-renowned writer Joyce Carol Oates, a three-time Nobel Prize nominee, will headline the 3rd Annual Mayborn Literary Nonfiction Writers Conference of the Southwest July 27-29, 2007 at the Hilton DFW Lakes Executive Conference Center in Grapevine, TX, five minutes from Dallas/Fort Worth Airport.

Oates will be joined by humor writer Mary Roach; publisher Nan A. Talese; Burkart Bilger, an author and staff writer for The New Yorker whose work has been anthologized in The Best American Science and Nature Writing; William Nack, an author and senior writer at Sports Illustrated; Kevin Fedarko, an award-winning adventure and travel writer at Outside magazine; Allison Adelle Hedge Coke, American Indian author of the stirring memoir, Rock, Ghost, Willow, Deer; and many other prominent authors, editors and literary agents.

Legendary writer Gay Talese will attend this year to visit with conference participants. "I'm convinced that anyone who attends the Mayborn Conference will leave with a new level of insights, storytelling skills, and understanding of the aesthetic qualities and requirements of literary nonfiction," Talese said.

The conference will also include a manuscript and article/essay writing contest. The manuscript winner will earn a provisional book publishing contact with UNT Press, and the 10 best articles or essays will be published in a literary journal jointly published by Hearst Newspapers and the Mayborn Graduate Institute of Journalism. The best articles and essays will also compete for $12,000 in cash prizes.

Students can register for $200, educators for $250 and the general public $275. The price includes sumptuous meals. Conference seating is limited.

Inland Press Foundation's Advanced Circulation Management seminar, scheduled for June 6-7 in Seattle, WA, offers veteran circulation managers new insight and proven tactics for improving newspaper distribution and operations.

Inland Press Foundation's Advertising Executives Conference

Inland Press Foundation’s Advertising Executives Conference, scheduled for June 13 – 14 in Seattle, WA, will provide newspaper advertising managers with a “big picture view” of the evolving advertising landscape.

This year’s program addresses the impact of new media on newspaper advertising packages and revenues. It examines “New Directions in Advertising,” and offers attendees insight on developing the “right mix” of products for growth and new revenue development. Speakers share tips on how to improve ad department operations by examining financial benchmarks and dealing with new operational realities. Other sessions address interactive sales, classified growth, the expansion of special sections and niche publications, and ways to develop standards for ad rep performance. The program also includes an idea exchange on the organizational structure of the advertising department.

Inland’s Advertising Executives Conference emphasizes overall management skills training for running a newspaper ad department and attendees will walk away with new tactics, ideas and encouragement to revenue-side leadership. Visual Workshop & Exhibition in Boston

Visual journalists from around the world will meet in Boston October 11-13, 2007 for the Society for News Design's 29th Annual Workshop & Exhibition. The international gathering, hosted by The Boston Globe, will take place at the Boston Park Plaza Hotel and Towers.

Sessions scheduled so far provide journalists from organizations of all sizes with the latest thinking on melding print and online design; covering the war in Iraq and the upcoming election; great design with little money; reinventing the front page; dynamic business presentation; planning and producing multimedia coverage; producing interactive graphics; reader-driven news; extreme sports design; and trends in typography.
