Join Us!
Founded in 1921 by 14 publishers, the Texas Daily Newspaper Association is now the collective voice of the state’s daily newspapers. Throughout our history we have subsidized schools, fought monumental legislative battles, and participated as a dominant force in the construction of paper mills, as well as recycling facilities.
Today, we are a member services organization with a focused interest in legislative issues which impact our newspaper and university constituents, as well as all Texans in the interest of freedom of information. Our day to day work includes educational opportunities for our publishing members, as well as internships for college students. In 2010, we will expand our focus, adding grant proposal submissions for expansion of our college intern program.
During Legislative years, we maintain a daily presence at the State Capital focused on protecting our right to “know.” On May 13, 2009, following intense efforts by TDNA, The Freedom of Information Foundation of Texas, Texas Association of Broadcasters, and Texas Press Association, Gov. Rick Perry signed House Bill 670, providing protection for journalists under subpoena from having to testify or produce documents gathered while acting as a journalist. The bill also allows journalists to protect their sources in certain cases.
As the only Association dedicated to the Daily Newspapers of Texas, and the only newspaper Association to employ a full time lobbyist, TDNA relies heavily on the support and interaction of our newspaper members. In addition to our lobbying efforts, TDNA produces a monthly circulation report and linage reports for all participating members. In 2009, these reports will be accessible through our website, providing valuable opportunities for interaction among our members. Our annual conference is known for both the educational content and networking opportunities!
Each year, the Association funds/administers a number of prestigious awards, including the Pat Taggart Award for Texas Newspaper Leader of the Year, Frank Mayborn Award for Community Leadership, John Murphy Award for Excellence in Copy Editing, Fred Hartman Excellence in Sportswriting Award and the Bright Idea Awards.
Realizing the strain recent budget adjustments placed upon our members, the TDNA Board of Directors lowered membership fees by 10% in 2009, making this the most affordable advocacy group your newspaper can obtain!
